Secretary Browning Visits Military Voters Overseas
Tallahassee, Fla (September 30, 2008) Secretary of State Kurt Browning is travelling in the Middle East to see firsthand how soldiers overseas get to cast their ballot in this important election season.
The Department of Defense invited Secretary Kurt Browning, along with the State Secretaries from California, Florida, Indiana, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, to meet with troops and voting representatives. This is the first time the Department of Defense has invited Secretaries of State to travel to the area of operation (AOR) to observe the absentee ballot process.
The purpose of the trip is to promote voter participation by military members and educate the Secretaries on the installation's voting assistance program and military members' voting experience.
The Secretary of Defense has administrative responsibility for the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act ("UOCAVA) that was enacted by Congress in 1986. Within the Department of Defense, the Secretary has assigned the responsibilities to the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) to the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy.
