Florida Women of Achievement, photographs by Scherley Busch on Display in the Cabinet Meeting Room Gallery

p>Secretary of State Kurt S. Browning announces an exhibition in honor of Women’s History Month (March 2008) featuring photographic portraits of notable Florida women by renowned Miami photographer Scherley Busch. The portraits will be on display from January 14, 2008, through April 18, 2008, in the Cabinet Meeting Room on the Lower Level of the Florida Capitol.

In collaboration with the Florida Commission on the Status of Women, Ms. Busch presents her Historic Women of Achievement documentary portraits, a collection that includes such notable women as Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Gloria Estefan, Chris Evert, Elaine Gordon, Patricia Ireland, Carrie Meek, Alex Sink, and Sylvia Whyte. Selected images from two of her Florida landscape series, Miami Dreamscapes and Tropical Visions, will also be on display in the anterooms of the Cabinet Meeting Room.

Educated in the fine arts, Scherley Busch developed her love of photography while working at the United Nations in New York City. In the 1970s, she exhibited black and white and color images captured in Spain where she lived and studied. Moving to Miami and an advertising-fashion photography career, she became one of the first female commercial photographers in the South. She has instructed at the University of Miami and Miami-Dade College and, today, she is recognized as one of the foremost portraitists in the state.

The Cabinet Meeting Room Gallery is located on the Lower Level of the Florida Capitol. Hours are Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For further information, contact Brannon Solomon at the Division of Cultural Affairs at 850/245-6415.
