Title: Director of Collections, Visual & Folk Arts

Description: The Director of Collections, Visual & Folk Arts serves in a leadership role for the Utah Division of Arts & Museums (UA&M) overseeing a team that is charged with the care, preservation, and curation of the State of Utah Alice Merrill Horne Art Collection, as well as the oversight of the visual art, traveling exhibition, public art, folk arts programs, and Chase Home Museum. The person in this role provides input on the direction of these program areas, collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to achieve the goals of UA&M, and guides the management of budget, policies, procedures, communication and administration for this team.

Reports to: Director of the Division of Arts & Museums

Key Responsibilities

  • Administration and Leadership
    • Manage a team (currently eight full-time) collections, visual, public and folk arts professionals, providing guidance, evaluation and oversight of annual program plans, department goals, timelines and work plans, curatorial direction, and performance management.
    • Supervise subordinate personnel including: hiring, training, monitoring and evaluating performance.
    • Develop and oversee budgets, programming and policies for collections, traveling exhibitions, visual, public, folk arts and Chase Home Museum programs.
    • Ensure that program and policy initiatives support the overall mission and strategic direction of UA&M’s 2024-2028 Strategic Plan.
    • Effectively coordinate and collaborate with the Utah Historical Society Director of Collections & Exhibitions and their collections team and Museum of Utah exhibition team, to ensure a productive and effective relationship as we move into and share facilities and collections management software at the new Museum of Utah.
    • Oversee internal communications for the team and assist in promoting and communicating to full UA&M staff and the public when appropriate.
    • Serve on the Arts & Museums Leadership Team and work to integrate all Arts & Museum teams.
    • Serve as a resource for management and staff; coordinates projects and ensures adequate administrative controls, quality and procedural efficiencies.
    • With the team, assess feasibility of current and future programs.
  • Program Leadership
    • Ensure that staff maintain excellent knowledge and understanding of the most up to date standards for collections care, display and management, folk arts fieldwork and programing, exhibition creation and management, public art management and service to artists programing.
    • Support development of tools to manage collections and public programs.
    • Support and help coordinate the collections move to the Museum of Utah in 2026
    • Suggest or collaborate on new initiatives that increase access to the public and artists with UA&M assistance and services.
    • Develop and oversee a new public art matching program (recently authorized by the Utah State Legislature).
  • Additional Responsibilities
    • Some evening or weekend working hours may be required.
    • Broad support or participation in the strategic direction of Arts & Museums.
    • Collaboration with community partners or internal stakeholders on special projects.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Ideal Candidate/Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will be a self-driven leader with significant knowledge of arts and museum administration/ best practices. Ideal qualifications include:
  • Demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated career growth and progressive responsibilities in the care and management of archival and arts collections, folk arts fieldwork and public programming, public art management and/or visual arts services, exhibition and public programming.
  • Demonstrated project management experience, with a strong history of leading staff in collaborative efforts.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or more of these areas: curatorial work, public programming, folklore, and visual arts.
  • Excellent oral communication and presentation skills; demonstrated written and presentation skills. The ability to communicate information clearly and effectively.
  • Demonstrated negotiation, evaluation and systems analysis skills.

 
Location/Work Schedule: This position may be eligible for an in-office or hybrid/flexible work schedule. Our office is located at 3760 Highland Dr, Millcreek, and  Art Storage, 350 S 500 West, Salt Lake City. Offices will be located at the Rio Grande Depot in 2028. A position's eligibility for remote work is established by agency management and is subject to change at their discretion at any time and for any reason.  Note: Under Administrative Rule R13-4 all work must be performed within the State of Utah.

Compensation: $32 - $40/hour depending on experience
