Description

Artists are invited to submit work to our current open call Great Artists Steal from Weds Jan 3 - Sun, Feb 18, 2024

"Great Artists Steal" encourages artists to create works inspired by their favorite artists and artworks from contemporary art and art history. This inspiration may come from the technique, content, or style of the artist(s) or artwork(s) in reference, and uniquely re-contextualizing these elements. This exhibition will allow artists the potential to bridge the gap between modernity and history, challenging traditional notions of perception and interpretation

Some examples of artists "stealing"... Titus Kaphar confronts history and the subjects of historical Western artworks, reconfiguring art history to include African-American subjects. Elizabeth Zvonar’s practice works towards presenting a new history by collecting images from a variety of historical sources and reinterpreting them through juxtaposition. And of course many artists create their own versions of other artists' works, for instance, Peter Saul famously created his own version of Picasso’s Guernica in his 1974 work, Saul’s Guernica, criticizing the Vietnam War.

The juror for this exhibition is Alicia Harper, Professor of Art History at SCF.
